This module will describe the various components of our Instructional Assistants Professional Development Program. We have a systematic approach to training to ensure that the newly hired Instructional Assistant receives information and develops skills to be successful in the school environment. Training extends beyond the Instructional Assistants as all staff members are consistently involved in workshops and conferences that address issues in the education of students with severe physical and complex communication needs. The following topics are addressed in our training and education of Instructional Assistants:

Knowing Your Student

The first step in providing effective support for a student in the educational environment is knowing the student. This begins with information found in the student's school records and extends to important details about how to support the student physically, communicatively, socially and educationally.

Confidentiality

Maintaining confidentiality is one of the most critical aspects for anyone in the educational environment. It is a legal and ethical responsibility to observe both the rights of students and families in regards to privacy information.

Inclusive Environments - Roles and Responsibilities

The roles and responsibilities of Instructional Assistants extend beyond The Bridge School classrooms into other educational and social environments. Learning how to support the students' active participation in these situations requires specialized learning.

Student Work Environment

Students with physical challenges require specialized work-stations in order to fully participate in learning and communication and to access the curriculum. Instructional Assistants play a critical role in maintaining the organization and effectiveness of the student's work-station and materials.

Communication/Teaching Strategies

As an integral member of the educational team at The Bridge School, Instructional Assistants play an active role in implementing the educational and communication curriculum. This involves everything from understanding the goals and expectations for the students to implementing educational activities under the direction and supervision of the professional staff.

Fostering Independence

Underlying all the activities at The Bridge School is the premise that the students are gaining necessary skills to be active participants in directing their learning and to, ultimately, take a leadership role in the decision-making process regarding their lives.
